Moving… May 8, 2009

So… after about a year of using this blog hosted by WordPress, I figure it’s time to move the blog to a different server. A couple of reasons are behind this. First, I wanted my own domain name, which I could still get by using a WordPress hosted blog. Second, and more importantly, I wanted more functionality. Having a blog hosted by WordPress is free, but there are limited things you can do as far as design, widgets, posting videos, etc. It just got to the point where I wanted my blog to do more and the only option is move to another server.
With that said, I present to you my new website / blog…
That’s “Richard L Wood dot org”
As with everything else, it’s a work in progress, and I hope to write more and better content on the new site. For those of you who subscribe to the RSS feed, please adjust your readers in order to pick up the new feed.
As for this site, it will still be around as I will use it to test out a few things from time to time, but all the new content will go on the new site.
Thanks for reading!

the weekend that was: Friday night, my friend Kevin and I went to Cedar Ridge High School to see one of our youth play in his last regular season lacrosse match. I don’t know much about lacrosse, other than seeing it played on TV a couple of times, but I got really into the game on Friday night. I wished they would have had this sport available at my high school when I was there.
Saturday, I spent most of the day around the house working on church stuff and other stuff around the house. That evening, Beth and I went to Maggiano’s for dinner and ran a few errands.
Sunday was church, a quick lunch, errands, back to church for Bible study, supper then watching the Hurricanes. All in all, not much happened this weekend.
where I am at the moment: My office at Preferred Communications.
on my to-do list this week: Testing equipment at work, work on Graduate Sunday stuff, get my new website ready to launch.
procrastinating about: Getting my new personal website ready to launch.
book(s) i’m in the midst of: Same as last week.
next trip(s): Nothing that I can think of right now.
how i’m feeling about this week: Eh…
Konami Code Reveals ESPN Ponies April 28, 2009

Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, start. If you’re from a certain generation, that sequence is burned into the fabric of your being. Apparently, an ESPN.com code jockey is from said generation. Up until yesterday, if the Konami code was entered on the site, it revealed an assortment of magical ponies.
It was pulled down by the suits at ESPN, but you can find a cached version of what was available on the ESPN.com homepage yesterday here. Just go there and type Up, Up, down, down, left, right, left, right, b, a, then press enter a bunch on your keyboard.

the weekend that was: I’ve been on vacation all week in St. Maarten, a small island in the Caribbean that is the only island controlled by two sovereign states, The Netherlands and France. On Friday, we flew back from St. Maarten to Charlotte, then from Charlotte to Raleigh, and pulled in our driveway at 11:45 PM. I’ll blog more about our trip later on, including an iRant.
This weekend was super busy. On Saturday morning, one of my youth Sunday school teachers and I went to White Plains United Methodist Church in Cary for YSOneDay, a one day training session put on by Youth Specialties. Duffy Robbins was the speaker for the day. I’ve heard him a couple of times before, and he did an excellent job leading our sessions for the day. After a trip back home to finish unpacking, Beth and I met up with our pastor and his wife as we went to go see Jordan High School’s production of Beauty and the Beast. Several of our youth were in the production, and they did an excellent job. My only complaint is that it was about 40 degrees in the auditorium.
Sunday was church stuff. That afternoon, I went to Cresset Christian Academy to see their production of Les Miserables, which several more of our youth were in. In contrast to the night before, it felt like it was 100 degrees in their family life center. Nevertheless, all of our youth there did a marvelous job. From there, it was back to church for our Sunday evening Bible study, followed by a quick trip to the grocery store, supper, and crashing for the rest of the evening.
where I am at the moment: My office at Preferred Communications.
on my to-do list this week: Getting caught up and organized, both work and church stuff. Youth Ministry Team meeting tonight, working on M-Fuge stuff, several webinars this week.
procrastinating about: Don’t know yet, still trying to figure out what I need to do this week.
book(s) i’m in the midst of: I made progress on Surprised by Hope, but still not done with it yet.
music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: Since I went to see Les Miserables yesterday, the music has been stuck in my head.
next trip(s): Nothing that I can think of right now.
how i’m feeling about this week: Pretty good, it was nice to have a week off to help me put some things in perspective.

the weekend that was: Friday evening Beth and I went to Seagrove and spent the night with her grandparents. I spent the evening catching up on church stuff and some reading, along with hitting the sack pretty early. Too much drama at the office this week for my taste. Saturday, after breakfast, Beth and I headed to Asheboro to get haircuts, then off to do some shopping to get last minute stuff for our upcoming vacation. Saturday evening was spent catching up on some stuff around the house and packing.
On Sunday, Beth led our Sunday School class while I led in the call to worship at Yates. After lunch, I finished up some church stuff then headed back to Yates for youth Bible study. Several of us went out to eat at Torero’s afterward, then I came home to finish packing and watch the Canes game.
where I am at the moment: At RDU, ready to go on vacation.
on my to-do list this week: I’m on vacation, so to get as much rest as possible.
procrastinating about: Nothing I care enough to think about at the moment..
book(s) i’m in the midst of: Same as last week. Hoping to finish them all this week.
next trip(s): I don’t know and I don’t care..
how i’m feeling about this week: I don’t know and I don’t care..

the weekend that was: Friday evening was spent around the house watching TV and resting. It had been a long frustrating week at work so an evening where I didn’t do much of anything was nice. Saturday, Beth and I spent part the day out running errands. I went to pick up my sister a birthday present, then hung out in Best Buy (my favorite store) while she did some shopping at The Streets at Southpoint. We had lunch at the food court before coming back by Lowe’s to pick up some flowers to plant around the house. Saturday evening, we went to see the Durham Bulls play the Norfolk Tides at the DBAP. Beth’s sister and her fiancée met us there. David Price, who pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series last year, was the starting pitcher for the Bulls. After the game, we hung around for the autograph session, were we got a signed baseball by him.
Sunday, we celebrated Easter at church, then took off to Seagrove and had lunch with Beth’s extended family. After lunch, most of us sat around and watched The Masters. Yesterday was also my father-in-law’s 60th birthday, so we all took him out to eat at Mayflower in Asheboro. Since I have to work today, I drove back to Durham and spent the rest of the evening watching the Cubs game on ESPN.
where I am at the moment: My office at Preferred Communications.
on my to-do list this week: Work-wise, doing some odds and ends around the office that I’ve been meaning to do for the past couple of weeks. Church-wise, planning the summer and getting our M-Fuge trip together, along with getting ready for our upcoming Youth Ministry Team meeting in the next couple of weeks.
procrastinating about: Getting the rest of my stuff together in planning our vacation for next week, along with a couple of other personal projects.
book(s) i’m in the midst of: Same as last week. Hoping to get a lot of reading accomplished while on vacation.
music that seemed to catch my attention this past week: Hymns about Holy Week, Easter, and Resurrection.
next trip(s): Leaving to go on vacation one week from today..
how i’m feeling about this week: Let’s just say I’m ready for a vacation.

20 Things That Have Happened Since The Chicago Cubs Last Won The World Series April 6, 2009

At 7:05 PM EST tonight, my beloved Chicago Cubs take the field at Minute Maid Park in Houston against the Houston Astros and begin their 101st season since they’ve won a World Series. The long dark night of the soul is over and hope springs eternal, at least for now. Join me as I live and die with this team over the next six and hopefully seven months as we once again try to achieve what hasn’t been done since 1908.
By the way, a lot has happened since then. What you ask? Well, here’s a list of 20 things that have happened since the Cubs last won it all.
- Radio was invented; Cub fans got to hear their team lose.
- TV was invented; Cub fans got to see their team lose.
- Baseball added 14 teams; Cub fans got to see AND hear their team lose to more teams.
- George Burns celebrated his 10th, 20th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 60th, 70th, 80th, 90th and 100th birthdays.
- Haley’s Comet passed Earth… twice.
- Harry Caray was born… and died. Incredible, but true.
- The NBA, NHL and NFL were formed, and Chicago teams won championships in each league.
- Man landed on the moon, as have several home runs given up by Cubs pitchers.
- Sixteen US presidents were elected.
- There were 11 amendments added to the Constitution.
- Prohibition was created, and repealed.
- The Titanic was built, set sail, sank, was discovered, and became the subject of major motion pictures… the latter giving Cub fans hope that something that finishes on the bottom can come out on top.
- Wrigley Field was built and becomes the oldest park in the National League.
- Flag poles were erected on Wrigley Field roof to hold all of the team’s future World Series pennants. Those flag poles have since rusted and been taken down.
- A combination of 40 summer & winter Olympics have been held.
- Thirteen baseball players have won the Triple Crown; several thanked Cubs pitchers.
- Bell bottoms came in style, went out of style, and came back in style.
- The Cleveland Indians, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks, and Florida Marlins have ALL won the World Series.
- The Cubs played 14,153 regular-season games; they lost the majority of them.
- Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and New Mexico were added to the Union.
